The Civil Defence network in the UK was set up after World War Two, when the threat of nuclear attack by Russia was thought to be a possibility. The service was disbanded in 1968, but some vehicles remain in the hands of preservationists.
Ireland still maintains a nationwide network and below are a selection of a few of the Irish appliances.

RXP 754 Civil Defence Green Goddess which is back in active service with South West Aux Fire service in Dublin. A new preservation unit has been set up so as to actively involve the vehicles more in day to day running of Dublin Civil Defence in association with the Motor Vehicle Preservation Society of Ireland.

This 1982 Dennis RS133 Wrl - 82 KY 717 - which served in Kenmare and was originally with Staffordshire (CRE 257 Y) has been acquired by Tralee AFS.
